Since 1986, The Carter Center has remained a pioneer in neglected tropical diseases, targeting diseases that impact the people who live in some of the most forgotten and impoverished communities on earth. The Center also strives to improve access to mental health care. To share our hard-earned skills and knowledge, and to ensure the best public health outcomes worldwide, the Center participates in a number of disease-fighting coalitions.

Abu Dhabi Declaration on the Eradication of Guinea Worm Disease
High-ranking representatives of several countries pledged to devote all resources needed to interrupt transmission of Guinea worm disease and certify its eradication by 2030. Ministers and dignitaries endorsed the Abu Dhabi Declaration on the Eradication of Guinea Worm Disease to ensure the neglected tropical disease becomes the first human disease to be eradicated since smallpox in 1980. The Abu Dhabi Declaration was agreed upon at the conclusion of the 2022 Guinea Worm Summit, a high-level, three-day event co-hosted by The Carter Center and Reaching the Last Mile, a portfolio of global health programs working toward disease elimination that is driven by the personal commitment of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.

The Neglected Tropical Disease Nongovernment Development Organisations Network (NNN).
During their sixth annual meeting in Abu Dhabi, UAE, in September 2015, members of the Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) Nongovernmental Development Organization Network declared their unanimous support for the inclusion of NTDs in the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (specifically Goals #3 and #6). Guided by a shared commitment to equitable and sustainable development, members present reconfirmed their commitment the London Declaration, and to working closely together to combat NTDs.

The Neglected Tropical Disease Non-Government Development Organisations Network
NGDOs, with governments, communities and other partners, implement strategies for NTD disease and morbidity control and disability prevention and management. During their third annual meeting in Sydney, Australia in September 2012, the NTD NGDO Network members present declared their full and unanimous support for the London Declaration on Neglected Tropical Diseases (The London Declaration).

Uniting to Combat Neglected Tropical Diseases
The London Declaration represents a new, coordinated push to accelerate progress toward eliminating or controlling 10 neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) by the end of the decade. Partners pledge to work together to improve the lives of the 1.4 billion people worldwide affected by NTDs, most of whom are among the world's poorest.
